The way Bible versions change meanings and significance of Bible Verses

I’ve heard this before and read it before but experiencing it for my self really made me shocked! I was reading my Bible and stumbled across a Bible verse I didn’t understand so I decided to compare it to NKJV and I was shocked and how different it was! I use NKJV because it’s very accurate to KJV (the original translation) and it doesn’t use words like ‘thy’ and ‘thou’ which mean ‘your’ and ‘you.’ It’s easier to comprehend. Alright, so below are the Bible verses I was reading through!

Read this for yourself:

“He who scorns instruction will pay for it, but he who respects a command is rewarded.” Proverbs 13:13 NIV

As I was reading this I was thinking to myself, instruction from who? What instruction? What kind of command to respect? And command from who?

I was truly confused as I was reading which is why I decided to read the Bible verse in another translation to see if I can get a better understanding, and boy did I!

“He who despises the word will be destroyed, but he who fears the commandment will be rewarded. ” Proverbs 13:13 NKJV

Ohhhh now I see! God is talking about instruction from His word. And by command, God is talking about His commandment. Boy did that NIV leave me confused for a second!

Ok, that was one verse! On to another:

“Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers little by little makes it grow.” Proverbs 13:11 NIV

I wasn’t confused by this bible verse, but I wondered if NKJV said the same thing!

“Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, but he who gathers by labor will increase.” Proverbs 13:11 NKJV

First part of the Bible verse is the same but second part is totally different! NIV is saying if you gather money little by little you make it grow. But NKJV says if you work then your money increases. You work for your money, you don’t get it by cheating. It fits with the first part of the Bible verse! Where as NIV makes the second part feel like it needs to be a seperate bible verse, “He who gathers little by little makes it grow.” I don’t think NIV is trying to take away meaning or change it on purpose but if you look for yourself that is what is happening!

I understand why there are different translations and versions of the Bible, because it’s good for new believers and children, but just seeing how the Word gets changed blows my mind. It’s a shame that we don’t get the original meaning God intended and placed in the Bible. I still believe that God will use His word, no matter the translation, to transform a persons heart but for the purest English form of the Bible, KJV or NKJV is the way to go! If this is new to you I suggest you do more research but better yet compare for yourself! If you don’t have both versions of the Bible you can use the Bible app!
