To the Mama with a Sick Child

This one is for you mama, the one who’s snuggling a sick baby or wiping a nose all day. When children are sick, it’s one of the hardest things about parenthood I would say. They are cranky, uncomfortable and may even cry all night because they can’t sleep.

Usually, I get down when the kids get sick, even if it’s a simple cold. I feel sad and worried. When I just had one child, and he would get sick, I would let it cripple my spirit. I would get depressed even. I think having more children, 3 boys now, helped me get passed my fears. When you have that many children, someone is bound to get sick. Although I thank God for His mercy and we go months without getting sick. Truly Gods grace. This time however, when my kids got a cold that they passed down to each other, I didn’t let it get to me and instead I believe God showed me a different way to look at it.

<Potatoes on head to reduce fever.>

When children are sick, we see it as a bad thing. They aren’t getting enough vitamins, we didn’t dress them warm enough, we didn’t sanitize the grocery cart well enough or anything else that we say that makes it seem like it’s our fault. Although any of those could be true, instead of being down about them being sick, we can still Praise God for His Goodness. I was reminded of this Bible verse:

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

Philippians 4:4

But how can we rejoice if everyone is miserable??

Followed by that Bible verse was a God given thought, Yes my child may be sick, but this means he’s healthy! His body is doing exactly what it needs to do to get rid of the cold/virus. I immediatly began thanking God for a healthy boy. Because to us, it looks like he’s not healthy, but really he is! His body is very healthy because it’s doing what God designed. God designed the body to be able to get rid of viruses. Even a fever might seem scary, and I’m not saying it’s not! But the reason the body gets a fever is because it’s trying to kill something. This means the body is healthy because it’s able to do that!

So even though the kids are uncomfortable and there may be some sleepless nights, I truly believe if we rejoice in God through those times, by thanking Him for a healthy child, whose body knows what to do to get rid of the virus, we will be blessed. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pray for our children if they do get sick, because believe me I do too! God please help this sickness leave fast!! But this means, we are living like true followers of Christ. And if our babies are not fighting a sickness, another way and reason to rejoice and thank God for healthy babies!

I pray that whoever needs to hear this, will! And I pray that God may bless you mama with wisdom and strength, the two most important things when raising children. Wisdom to know how to train them, that they will listen to us, obey us, and most importantly come to know Christ. And strength, because we need it when the house is a mess from dinner, the kids spilled the juice again and your baby just exploded their diaper 🙂

God bless you sister,

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

Colossians 2:6-7
